Fugitive Gas Emissions Survey, UK Onshore
Overview
Sky-Futures recently delivered a comprehensive fugitive emissions survey in the UK, focused on identifying new emission sources, verifying existing leaks, and acquiring updated methane measurements.
A detailed survey was conducted using Optical Gas Imaging (OGI), supported by a portable methane leak detector. The assessment targeted key process areas and equipment, including valves, hatches, flanges, and instrumentation, enabling the identification and quantification of emissions at component level.
A total of 46 existing emission points were reassessed. Several previously identified leaks were confirmed as repaired, while additional new sources were detected. Each emission source was documented with visual evidence and corresponding methane concentration measurements, and the site emissions register was updated accordingly. Operational factors, such as partial process outages, were also recorded to ensure emissions data accurately reflected actual plant conditions.
Results
The campaign delivered a high-confidence, measurement-based emissions inventory alongside a prioritised list of repair actions. This supports OGMP 2.0 reporting requirements, enhances transparency, and enables targeted methane reduction across operations.
